What PTE Core is
PTE Core is Pearson Test of English Core, a computer-based English test completed at a test centre. It assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing through everyday English rather than an academic-study context.
Who uses PTE Core in Canada
The Government of Canada currently lists PTE Core for Express Entry language results. Candidates should still verify the exact test, minimum CLB level, score validity and eligibility rules for their own immigration or citizenship pathway.
PTE Core format, duration and task types
The test takes roughly two hours and runs in this order: Speaking and Writing, Reading, then Listening. Pearson currently presents 7 scored Speaking and Writing task types, 5 Reading task types and 7 Listening task types.
Scores, CLB targets and preparation
PTE Core reports scores on a 10–90 scale. Canadian programmes commonly assess the four skills against CLB requirements, so preparation should begin with the required score for each skill and continue through task practice, feedback and realistic mock review.
