What PTE Core scores are required for CLB 7?
The current Government of Canada table maps CLB 7 to Listening 60–70, Reading 60–68, Speaking 68–75 and Writing 69–78. When a program requires CLB 7 in every ability, each score must meet its own range.
What PTE Core scores are required for CLB 9?
PTE Core CLB 9 maps to Listening 82–88, Reading 78–87, Speaking 84–88 and Writing 88–89. The four targets are different and should be checked separately.
What CLB is a PTE Core score of 50, 60, 70 or 80?
The same score maps differently by skill. A score of 50 is Listening CLB 6, Reading CLB 5, Speaking CLB 4 and Writing CLB 4; 60 maps to 7, 7, 6 and 6; 70 maps to 7, 8, 7 and 7; 80 maps to 8, 9, 8 and 8.
Can an overall PTE Core score be converted to CLB?
No. IRCC uses the individual Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing results. An overall PTE Core score does not replace the four separate CLB comparisons.
Read all four PTE Core scores
Use the four individual scores from your score report, not the overall score. This chart starts at CLB 4: Reading 32 shows “below CLB 4”; 33 maps to CLB 4. It does not assign CLB 1–3.
Compare each skill with the chart
Find the CLB level for each language skill instead of looking only at an overall result.
Plan the next practice target
Use the result to decide whether to practise speaking fluency, writing accuracy, reading speed or listening review first.
Worked example: one skill below a CLB 9 study target
Try these illustrative scores in the calculator: Listening 82, Reading 77, Speaking 84 and Writing 88. They map to CLB 9, 8, 9 and 9 respectively. If your study target is at least CLB 9 in each skill, Reading is below it. The lowest-CLB summary is only the minimum of four results, not an official overall CLB or an eligibility decision. CLB 9 is an example target, not a requirement for every program.
Change Reading 77 to 78 and compare again
Keep Listening 82, Speaking 84 and Writing 88, but enter Reading 78. The results become CLB 9 in all four skills. This one-point boundary explains which score needs attention; it does not predict how much study is needed or guarantee a one-point gain on your next test.
A higher score does not invalidate a minimum target
With Listening 89, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88, the results are CLB 10+, 9, 9 and 9: all still meet an at-least-CLB-9 study target. The top of the CLB 9 score band is not a maximum allowed score. But if Reading stays at 77, higher Listening does not compensate for Reading CLB 8.
